At Manna House, October is Winter Shelter Volunteer Recruitment month. We have a great team of experienced volunteers from the past 3 years but it really is the more the merrier for this project. And we’re aiming to get 30 more people on board before volunteer training starts in November.

We ask our volunteers to commit to one night a week between 1 December and 28 February (excluding 24 to 27 December) to join a small team of experienced volunteers to:

  • make, serve and share supper with up to 6 or 7 homeless people (carefully assessed and referred to the Shelter by Manna House) in a church venue in Kendal
  • make up beds and spend the evening chatting/playing board games etc until lights out
  • stay over if you can (only 2 volunteers need to stay over a night), and
  • serve breakfast and pack things away in the morning (Shelter closes at 9am).

You don’t need to be young and strong – or old and wise – you just need to be willing and prepared to lend a sympathetic ear to some very vulnerable people.

Manna House was born in April 2002, initially housed on Kirkland, Kendal, and then moving to the Shakespeare Centre later that year. We moved to larger premises at Castle Lodge on Aynam Road in April 2010. In October 2018, we moved to the Stephenson Centre, off Ann Street, near Kendal station.
