We had a lovely trip on Monday with ‘Sew What?’, our regular women’s group. Kendal’s Abbot Hall art gallery had invited us to see the Monet painting ‘Haystacks: Snow Effect’ which is on display there for the next two months – for free! It’s only 3 weeks until Saturday 24 February, when the Friends of Manna House (FOMS) hold their annual Big Swim at Kendal Leisure Centre, so now’s the time to choose your challenge and collect your sponsorship form. Over Christmas ladies’ fashion and beauty salon Maya Maya, in Wainwright’s Yard, ran a wrapping service with a difference – for donations to Manna House. Our Benefits Officer, Angela (right), went to pick up the proceeds yesterday and it’s been such a success that they’ve kindly offered to gift wrap for us all year round. Thank you, Maya Maya!

This week’s Skills Cafe was led by Nela, our Kitchen Lead, and was all about making a delicious, nutritious Indian meal for a fraction of the price of a takeaway. Everyone shared their knowledge, skills and taste and the final product went down very well with all the guests, too. Some even tried Chai tea for the first time, too. Looking forward to more affordable, healthy takes on favourite takeaways…

This week our Sew What? craft group enjoyed jazzing up a few plain knitted hats with some gorgeous crafty flowers – knitted, felt and crocheted – and don’t they just look amazing?! Perfect for adding a bit of colour to a grey January day.

A belated thanks to the super kitchen volunteers (just some of whom – Anna, Hazel, Glynis – made it into this picture with Clare) who helped to make our meal on the 22 December such a success. We served a full Christmas dinner to at least 66 clients and most came back for seconds, followed by Sylvie’s splendid home-made birthday cake as well as mountains of mince pies.
